With the election of Barack Obama in 2008, our nation had its first African American president. For some, this historic milestone was a clear sign the dreams of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s had been fulfilled – we had finally entered a post-racial era free of divisive issues based on skin color. How could a country that elected a black man as president really be racist? The reality of the intervening years made it clear that, although great progress had been made, race was still a central defining conflict within our nation.

The latest show of these four exquisitely talented musicians brings together some of the best works by Django Reinhardt, Félix Leclerc and American swing composers. With a singular mix of virtuosity, daring and humor, the string band draws inspiration from one artist’s poetry and the other’s swing to weave a rich new musical universe. They’ve expanded their concept to the wonderful swing music of some contemporary “friends” of Django and Félix.
